“胖”其实也分很多种，有些是健康范围内的微胖，有些则是不健康的肥胖了，分别该用哪个词呢？

聊天中，想形容别人只是“肉肉的”，当然是不能用fat这么粗暴，又应该用哪个词呢？

1. fat

说到“肥胖”，可能大家第一个想到的词是fat，但是说别人fat是显得粗鲁没礼貌的，就像是我们中文里直接说人家“胖”一样。

I know that eating too much chocolate will get fat easily, but I just can’t resist the temptation. 我知道吃太多巧克力很容易变胖，但我就是抵挡不住诱惑。

2. overweight

这个词除了作动词和名词，还可以做形容词哦，表示“体重超常的；过重的”，指的是超过了应该有的体重数。

slightly overweight 略微超重

You have to help your brother lose weight, because he is 30 pounds overweight now. 你必须得帮你弟弟减肥，他现在已经超重30磅了。

3. obese

obese表示“肥胖的；过胖的”指的是胖得已经威胁到了健康，是不健康、病态的肥胖。

It is said that the number of obese children in the town has increased a lot, so serious measures have to be taken to deal with this problem. 据说这个镇里多了很多肥胖孩子，这个问题必须要采取认真措施解决。

4. big

big除了可以表示物体的大，还可以表示体型的大，不过呢，在书面语当中，large会比big更常用。

When Jane was talking on the phone, a big man stole her purse while nobody dared to catch the thief. 当简在打电话的时候，有个大块头的男人偷了她的钱包，然而没有人敢抓住那个小偷。

5. flabby

flabby指的是因为肌肉松弛、松垂而看起来没有吸引力。

Mike, who used to be the strongest man in our dorm, became flabby after working in the new company. 麦克以前在我们宿舍是最强壮的，但是在这家新公司工作后，身材就变得松弛。

6. portly

portly是个文绉绉的词，多用来形容年长男子，表示“肥胖的；发福的”。

The students said that they met a portly old gentleman yesterday, who is actually the headmaster of the school. 学生们说他们昨天遇到一位发福的老先生，事实上那位老先生就是学校的校长。

7. chubby

这个词指的是有点微胖，但是胖得看起来健康好看，表示“胖嘟嘟的”，多用来形容婴儿和小孩。

Many teachers in the school likes Kate who is a lovely kid with a chubby face. 凯特是个可爱的小孩子，有着胖嘟嘟的脸蛋，学校里很多老师都喜欢她。

8. plump

plump多用于形容女人或小孩子有点微胖，但也是胖得好看的，表示“丰满的；胖乎乎的”。

所以想表达“肉肉的身材”，就可以用这个词，避开用fat啦。比如“你只是肉肉的”：You're plump, not fat at all!
